Shopping for a shredder? Start with what you need to put through it. Compare machine types, feed openings and horsepower, then find used equipment that fits the job.
How to Choose a Used Industrial Shredder
A pile of plastic offcuts, a stack of old tires and a bin of metal scrap all call for size reduction, but they don’t necessarily call for the same shredder. Before you compare brands or prices, think about the biggest piece you’ll feed into the machine and what you want coming out the other end.
You’ll find everything from compact shop machines to large recycling systems among the industrial shredders for sale on Surplus Record. A used shredder can be a good fit when its opening, cutting system and power match your work. Here’s how to sort through the options and recognize the specs that matter.
Start With Your Material
What are you shredding, how big are the pieces, and how much do you need to get through in a day? Keep those three answers handy as you browse.
Single-Shaft Shredders
For plastic offcuts, wood scraps and similar material, a single-shaft shredder is often a useful place to start. A rotating cutter works against fixed knives, while a screen helps control the size of the pieces leaving the machine. Many models use a powered ram to push material toward the rotor. The pictured Artech AZR 600 has a seller-listed 23.5 × 31.5-inch opening and 25 HP motor.


Twin-Shaft and Quad-Shaft Shredders
Have bulky material that needs breaking down first? Twin-shaft shredders use two sets of opposing cutters to pull it in and shear it apart. Quad-shaft machines add another pair of shafts; some also use screens to keep larger pieces inside for more cutting. The pictured FS130140 is one screened example. More shafts don’t automatically mean a better fit—choose the design around your material and desired result.
Industrial Paper Shredders
If you’re processing boxes of documents, look beyond how fast the machine cuts. Loading the paper and collecting the shreds can take just as much attention. The pictured Allegheny system combines a paper shredder, box dumper and baler. When comparing industrial paper shredders, check feed width and cut size. For confidential documents, make sure the machine meets your required destruction standard.


Tire Shredders and Rubber Recycling
Feeding whole tires is a different job from shredding loose rubber scraps. Start with the largest tires you’ll handle and whether they need cutting beforehand. The pictured BCA PD1000-TIR combines shredding, conveyors and screening. Browse tire shredders with your finished product in mind: making rough chips takes different equipment from producing fine crumb rubber.
What Will You Be Shredding?
Picture a normal day’s material, not just the easiest pieces in the pile. Are you feeding small plastic offcuts, full pallets or a mixed load from the shop? Take a few photos and measure the largest items. That gives a seller a much clearer idea of your needs than “I need a heavy-duty shredder.”
For plastics, tell the seller whether you’re handling thick molded parts, thin film or a mixture. Those materials don’t feed the same way. If you need small, fairly even pieces for the next step, you may also want to compare plastic granulators. For wood, explain whether you’ll be loading short offcuts or whole pallets, including any nails or other material mixed in.
Metal takes a little more detail, too. Light sheet-metal scrap and thick solid pieces are very different loads. Ask whether the shredder is built for the metal you actually have, then consider the recycling equipment you’ll need to move and sort the shredded material.
A test with your own material is especially helpful when you’re comparing machines. You can see how easily it feeds, how often the shredder stops or reverses, and whether the finished pieces are what you need.
Key Shredder Specifications to Look For
A shredder needs to handle the size of your material, keep up with your workload and produce pieces you can use. Feed opening and cutting chamber size are a good starting point, followed by horsepower, rotor size, cutters, screens and available power. Feed Opening and Cutting Chamber
Can the material fit? That’s the first question to answer. Feed openings and cutting chambers are usually described by two dimensions, such as the Artech’s 23.5 × 31.5-inch opening or the BCA tire shredder’s 35 × 30-inch cutting chamber. Look closely at what is being measured: the hopper at the top can be wider than the cutting area below it.
If you want to feed whole car tires, measure the outside diameter and width of the largest tires you expect to handle. The wheel size marked on the tire isn’t its outside diameter. Check the usable opening and ask the seller whether that machine handles those tires whole or needs them cut first. A tire fitting through the hopper is only part of the answer; the cutters and drive must be suited to it, too.
Horsepower (HP)
Motor horsepower helps you compare the power available for shredding. You’ll see smaller units around the pictured Artech’s 25 HP, as well as much larger machines with two drive motors. A title that says “(2) 75 HP motors” is describing two motors, so read the whole line rather than comparing the number 75 with another machine’s total rating.
Make sure the figure refers to the shredding drive. A separate motor may run the hydraulic ram, conveyor or cooling system. More horsepower can support a heavier workload, but it doesn’t tell you on its own how much of your material the machine will process.
Shaft Count and Rotor Dimensions
Single-shaft, dual-shaft and quad-shaft describe the basic cutting arrangement. You may also see rotor diameter and rotor length or width, particularly on single-shaft machines. Those dimensions describe the rotating cutting assembly, not the size of the hopper.
Use them to compare machines of the same type. If one listing gives a 52-inch rotor and another gives a 52-inch feed opening, you’re looking at two different measurements. Ask for the missing dimension before treating them as equal-size machines.
Cutter Width and Screen Size
These numbers help you work out what will come out of the shredder. Look at cutter thickness, blade width and screen openings, which may be specified as 1/2 inch or 1 inch. Cutter width helps determine the strip width on shear shredders; a screen keeps material inside for more cutting until it can pass through.
Ask which cutters and screen are installed now, and request a photo or sample of the output. A screen size isn’t a promise that every piece will be the same length, especially with flexible material.
Capacity: Pounds, Tons or Tires per Hour
A production rate tells you how much material a shredder is rated to process in a given time. The BCA example lists 175–250 tires per hour, while other machines use pounds or tons per hour. Those ratings are useful only when you know what was being shredded. Whole passenger tires, larger tires and pre-cut rubber aren’t the same load.
Tell the seller how much you need to process and ask what the machine can do with that material. Include loading and collection time when you work out whether it will keep up with your day.
Voltage and Phase
Before you shortlist an electric shredder, compare its power requirements with your building’s supply. Check the voltage and phase on the motor and control-panel plates. A machine listed at 460 V is not something to assume will plug into your existing setup.
Have your electrician check the full installation, including any hydraulic unit and conveyors. If you’re looking at a diesel-powered machine instead, factor engine condition and fuel use into the comparison.
What to Check Before Buying a Used Shredder
- Get a close look at the cutters.
Ask for clear photos of the knives, rotor and screen. Chipped edges and heavy wear can mean a parts bill before you put the machine to work. Have a qualified technician assess anything you’re unsure about. - Find out what it has been shredding.
A machine’s previous job helps you understand its wear. Ask about operating hours, maintenance and major repairs, along with any replacement cutters or rebuilt gearboxes. - See it process material.
A recent video is useful; a demonstration with material like yours is better. Watch how it feeds and look at the finished pieces. A motor running with nothing in the hopper tells you much less. - Check the equipment around it.
Look over the frame, hydraulics, controls and conveyors as well as the cutting chamber. Confirm that guards, access-door interlocks and emergency stops are in place and working. Have internal checks done by qualified personnel with the machine properly isolated from its energy sources. - Know what you’re taking home.
Get the included hopper, conveyors, screens, spare knives and controls listed in writing. Then confirm who handles dismantling, loading and transport, and whether the machine can get through your doors.
What Else Should You Budget For?
The asking price is only the beginning. A less expensive shredder may need new knives, a control-panel repair or a conveyor before it’s ready for your shop. Compare what comes with each machine so you don’t mistake a bare shredder for a complete working line.
Get prices for moving and installing it, too. Rigging, freight, electrical work and any foundation changes can add up. Ask about replacement knives and screens while you’re shopping: knowing their cost and lead time is more useful now than after a worn part stops production.
Think about where the material goes next. A paper operation may need a horizontal baler to handle the shreds. A tire-recycling line may need more cutting and screening to make the rubber product you want. Where you need to remove freed steel, compare suitable magnetic separators. Include those pieces when you compare the total cost.
Frequently Asked Questions
A few common questions come up when buyers start comparing shredders.
Think of the shredder as the machine that gets bulky material down to a more manageable size. A granulator is often the next step when you need smaller, more even pieces. You may need one machine or both, depending on what you’re feeding and what you want to do with the output.
Start with the material and the size of the pieces you want. A screened single-shaft machine may suit plastic or wood scrap that needs a more controlled output. A twin-shaft machine may be a better starting point for breaking down bulky material. Ask the seller to explain why the particular model suits your job.
There isn’t one useful price for the whole category. Size, condition and included equipment make a big difference. Compare current used industrial shredder listings, then add moving, installation and any repairs to the asking price. That gives you a fairer comparison between machines.
Some machines can handle several materials, but don’t assume every shredder can. Tell the seller exactly what is in your pile, including the thickest or toughest pieces. A machine that handles plastic packaging may be completely wrong for steel scrap or whole tires.
Not necessarily. A tire shredder may only make rough chips for another machine to process. If you want crumb rubber, tell the seller the finished size and cleanliness you need. You may need further cutting, screening, and steel or fiber removal to get there.
Photos of your material are a good start. Add the largest piece dimensions, how much you need to process each day and the output you want. Include your location and available power. Ask what comes with the machine and whether the seller can show it working with material like yours.
