Description
IRM 12" BULL BLOCK WIRE DRAWING MACHINE
MACHINE OVERVIEW
The IRM 12" Bull Block Wire Drawing Machine is a compact, heavy-duty wire-processing machine configured for laboratory research, process development, material testing, intermediate wire reduction, and small-batch wire drawing applications.
The machine utilizes a 12" diameter powered drawing drum and interchangeable die arrangement to provide the pulling force required to reduce metallic rod or wire through a selected drawing die.
The bull block configuration allows material to be drawn through a die and accumulated around the powered drum, providing a straightforward and versatile platform for development of drawing schedules, material trials, intermediate reductions, and finished-wire development.
The machine can also be used to draw modified-square rod or wire progressively back toward a round profile and continue reduction toward the required finished wire diameter. This makes the bull block particularly useful for development of welding wire, additive-manufacturing feedstock, and other specialty wire products.
The machine will be supplied with a new 5 HP AC motor and modern variable-frequency drive for smooth, adjustable drawing speed.
MACHINE CONSTRUCTION
The IRM 12" Bull Block utilizes a heavy-duty industrial frame and drum assembly designed to provide the rigidity and stability required for wire drawing applications.
The machine supports the drawing drum, drivetrain, die holder, electrical controls, guarding, and related components within a compact standalone configuration suitable for laboratory trials, process development, and small-batch wire drawing.
The frame, drum assembly, drivetrain, die holder, mounting surfaces, and related structural and mechanical components will be inspected and prepared as appropriate for the final machine configuration.
DRAWING DRUM & DIE HOLDER
The machine is equipped with a 12" diameter drawing drum that provides the powered capstan surface required to pull material through the drawing die.
Multiple wraps of wire around the drum provide the traction necessary to transmit drawing force while allowing material to be accumulated on the drum during operation.
A die holder provides a secure mounting location for interchangeable drawing dies, allowing the machine to accommodate different wire sizes, cross-sections, materials, reductions, and process requirements.
Drawing dies can be selected around the customer's material, incoming geometry, desired finished diameter, reduction schedule, lubrication requirements, and intended application.
For applications involving modified-square rod or wire, an appropriate die sequence can be developed to progressively transition the material toward a round profile while continuing reduction toward the desired finished diameter.
Unless specifically stated in the quotation, drawing dies are not included with the base machine and can be quoted separately based on the customer's final material and process requirements.
DRIVE, ELECTRICAL & CONTROLS
The machine will be supplied with a new 5 HP AC motor and modern variable-frequency drive to provide smooth, adjustable drawing speed.
Variable-speed operation allows the operator to select an appropriate drum speed based on material type, starting and finished dimensions, die configuration, reduction schedule, lubrication, and process requirements.
The machine will be supplied with new electrical controls configured for straightforward and reliable operation. The control system will incorporate the variable-frequency drive, machine start/stop functions, adjustable drum speed, emergency-stop circuitry, and other controls and safety functions appropriate to the final machine configuration.
The final electrical supply voltage and drawing-speed range will be configured around the customer's facility and intended application.
DRAWING PROCESS
During operation, material is directed through the selected drawing die and onto the powered bull block drum.
As the drum rotates, the material is pulled through the die, reducing its cross-sectional area while increasing its length. The drawn material is wrapped around and accumulated on the drum as required by the process.
Depending on the application, the bull block may be used for intermediate wire reduction, final sizing, development of drawing schedules, or progressive conversion of non-round material such as modified-square rod or wire toward a round finished profile.
This flexibility makes the machine well suited for R&D applications involving welding wire, additive-manufacturing feedstock, alloy development, specialty wire, and other applications requiring controlled wire reduction and sizing.
AVAILABLE TOOLING & OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT
Drawing Dies & Tooling
Drawing dies can be supplied based on the customer's material, incoming dimensions and cross-section, desired finished diameter, reduction schedule, and process requirements.
Die material, geometry, approach angle, bearing length, and other characteristics can be selected around the intended wire-drawing application.
A complete die schedule can be developed once the material, starting geometry, target finished size, and desired drawing reductions are established.
Wire Payoff Equipment
Payoff equipment can be supplied where required to support controlled feeding of coiled wire or rod into the bull block. Available configurations can be selected around coil size, weight, material, and intended operating arrangement.
Wire Guides & Material Handling
Custom entry guides, guide rollers, supports, and related material-handling components can be incorporated to assist with routing and controlling material as it approaches the drawing die and bull block.
Lubrication System
Drawing lubrication equipment can be incorporated where required by the material, die configuration, reduction schedule, and intended process.
Process Instrumentation & Data Acquisition
Additional instrumentation may be incorporated for research and process-development applications where measurement or recording of drawing parameters is desired. Depending on the selected instrumentation, available signals may include drum speed, motor current, drawing force, material temperature, and other process data.
Custom Engineering & System Integration
IRM can engineer additional equipment and functionality around the bull block, including custom material handling, payoff equipment, guides, lubrication systems, instrumentation, HMI functionality, automation, communications, and integration with customer equipment or facility systems.
These and other application-specific options can be quoted separately upon request.
PROCESS CAPABILITY
The IRM 12" Bull Block provides a versatile platform for laboratory research, process development, material testing, intermediate wire reduction, final sizing, and small-batch wire drawing.
The 12" drawing drum, variable-speed drive, and interchangeable drawing-die arrangement allow the machine to be configured for a range of metallic wire-drawing applications and material-development programs.
The machine can be used to develop drawing schedules, evaluate material behavior through successive reductions, conduct process trials, and investigate the effects of drawing parameters on finished wire characteristics.
It is also well suited for applications where modified-square rod or wire must be progressively drawn back toward a round profile and reduced to a required finished diameter, including development of welding wire, additive-manufacturing feedstock, and other specialty wire products.
Actual drawing performance, permissible reduction per pass, finished diameter, surface condition, drawing speed, and dimensional results will vary based on material properties, incoming geometry, die geometry and condition, lubrication, drawing speed, temperature, reduction schedule, and other process variables.
Final die sizes, reduction schedules, intermediate dimensions, and achievable finished wire sizes will be established based on the customer's finalized material and process requirements and should be considered application-dependent rather than guaranteed process outcomes.
