Looking back to 1924 when we first got the idea of creating a publication to serve the Used Machinery Industry we marvel at the optimism we had. Probably it was “youth”—we had no money! Anyway, a small group of dealers liked our idea and SURPLUS RECORD was launched.
In our first editorial we referred to SURPLUS RECORD as an “Industrial Bargain Sheet.” We said:
“It enters the group of trade and industrial publications as the marketing guide for surplus and used equipment. It serves buyer and seller.—Many of our readers are at the present time finding it advantageous to use rebuilt and surplus equipment. It is to aid this group and to serve others economy of buying used and surplus equipment that SURPLUS RECORD finds its excuse for existence.”
A lot of water has gone over the dam since that time and it has been with some difficulty that we have “hewed to the line”—keeping this publication a Reference Guide for used equipment exclusively.
January 1939 will mark the fifteenth milestone for SURPLUS RECORD. We are going to register this fifteenth anniversary with a special Buyer’s Reference Number. It will contain a complete inventory of available machine tools, electrical, power and general industrial equipment. Every representative dealer will advertise. This Buyer’s Reference Number, which is an annual affair, will be of value to every buyer in every Industrial throughout the United States.
For fifteen years many of these same dealers who advertised in the early issues of SURPLUS RECORD have been advertising in its pages continuously. We are publishing Fifteenth Anniversary Number as a tribute to those who have loyalty supported this publication. We want every manufacturing executive to have a copy of this issue. A request on your letterhead will insure receipt of a personally addressed copy.
