Machines weighing 500,000 lbs. each are not very commonplace items in the average manufacturing plant and it is even more unusual when large units of this kind are offered for resale. In this issue of SURPLUS RECORD one of these large pieces of manufacturing equipment is offered for sale. It has a capacity of 750 tons pressure and is capable of stamping the entire side of an automobile body or a complete turret top in a single operation. It is equal in height to a three-story building and is operated by electrical equipment which is a veritable power plant in itself. A 300 H.P. main motor and pump with auxiliary motors, exciter, oil filters, control panel, centralized lubricating system will give an idea as to its magnitude.
We believe that an unusually large unit like this, warrants more than passing notice because it emphasizes the importance of the used machinery industry as an economic factor. Some manufacturer will be able to save thousands of dollars and many months of time required in the manufacturing and assembling of such a large machine.
This offering recalled to our mind some other large used machines which have been sold in recent months. A dealer in Pittsburgh wrote us a few days ago of what they believe was the largest Press Brake ever sold in the used machinery market. It is a 25’ Brake and has a total ram pressure of 1,000 tons. Another tremendous unit which was sold by a used machinery dealer in New York State was a set of 40’ pyramid type Bending Rolls capable of handling a boiler plate of 1 ½” in thickness. Last Fall we made mention of a 26’ steel Boring Mill which was shipped abroad and weighed in the neighborhood of 500,000 lbs. High pressure boilers, turbo-generators, overhead cranes and gigantic stripping shovels weighing 100 tons or more are purchased each year by alert manufacturers who know that big units of this kind can still give years and years of useful service and can be purchased at a fraction of their original cost.
