In November 1924, a modest 30-page catalog made its debut in the industrial world. My great-grandfather, Thomas P. Scanlan, introduced it with these words:
“With this issue, Surplus Record makes its initial appearance. It enters the group of trade and industrial publications as the marketing guide for used and surplus new equipment. It serves buyer and seller… It is truly the Industrial Bargain Sheet.”
Today, as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of Surplus Record, I reflect on a century of dedication to that original mission: serving as the premier marketplace for used and surplus industrial equipment, and staying true to our roots as “The Industrial Bargain Sheet.”
The Visionary Beginnings
In the early 1920s, while working for “American Machinist,” my great-grandfather recognized a growing demand in the used machinery market. He envisioned a publication solely dedicated to connecting buyers and sellers of surplus equipment. When his proposal was met with skepticism by the McGraw brothers of McGraw-Hill, he took a bold step. Quitting his job, he set out independently to bring his vision to life. The result was the first issue of Surplus Record in November 1924.
Championing Industry and Fairness
From its inception, Surplus Record was more than just a catalog—it was an advocate for machinery dealers and the industrial community. The early editions were filled with editorials pushing back against restrictive legislation, price capping, and unfair tax depreciation laws that disadvantaged dealers of used equipment. Our commitment to fairness caught the attention of senators and congressmen, many of whom expressed gratitude for our support in fostering a more equitable industry.
Growth Through the Decades
The aftermath of World War II marked a significant turning point. The influx of surplus machinery needing repurposing for civilian use expanded our catalog and solidified our role in the industry. What started as a small publication evolved into a comprehensive guide, connecting thousands of buyers and sellers monthly. Despite the growth, our essence remained the same: providing a platform for money-saving opportunities and promoting the real economy of buying used and surplus equipment.
Four Generations, One Mission
Surplus Record has had the unique privilege of being led by four generations of the Scanlan family: my great-grandfather, Thomas P. Scanlan; my grandfather, Thomas M. Scanlan; my father, Thomas C. Scanlan; and myself, Thomas McAuliffe Scanlan. Each generation faced its own set of challenges and advancements—from industrial booms and technological innovations to the digital transformations of today. Yet, through every era, we’ve upheld the principles laid out by my great-grandfather: to serve both buyer and seller with integrity and dedication.
Staying True to “The Industrial Bargain Sheet”
Even as we’ve adapted to changing times, the core of Surplus Record remains unchanged. We are still the go-to source for those seeking quality used and surplus machinery and electrical equipment. Our commitment to offering value, fostering connections, and supporting the industrial community is as strong today as it was a century ago.
Looking Ahead
As we stand at this centennial milestone, we are filled with gratitude for the trust and support of our readers, advertisers, and partners. Your loyalty has allowed us to continue our mission and adapt in an ever-evolving industry. The future holds exciting possibilities. We are embracing new technologies to enhance our platform, making it easier than ever for buyers and sellers to connect. Yet, we promise that the essence of Surplus Record—the dedication to being “The Industrial Bargain Sheet”—will never waver.
Thank You!
To everyone who has been part of our journey over the past 100 years, thank you. Here’s to a century of surplus and to many more years of serving you with the same passion and commitment that started it all!
