2026 Outlook: Chip Expansion Fuels Practical Equipment DemandBy Thomas (Tommy) Scanlan January 15, 2026The chip demand story for 2026 is not really about AI hype. It is about capacity and infrastructure. When a new semiconductor facility gets announced, people picture ultra specialized process tools that most of us will never touch. We’ve all seen the interviews on TV where they walk around these new facilities that look like something out of a sci-fi TV show with Elon Musk pointing to various pristine looking servers blinking green and blue. But the reality is that building chip capacity is a massive industrial project before it is a technology story. It means new buildings, expansions, utilities, uptime requirements, and an always on appetite for reliable power and cooling. And that is where a big part of the used equipment market stays relevant and, honestly, gets stronger. xAI Data Center in South Memphis, TN (worlds largest AI Supercomputing Center)Start with the backbone: electrical and power equipment. More facilities and more data centers means more transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, UPS systems, generators, VFDs, and electric motors. Even when buyers order new, they still need backups, spares, and quick ship options. They also need replacements when lead times slip or when a project schedule changes. That is exactly where quality used and rebuilt power gear earns its keep.Next is the unsung hero category: thermal management and process support. Chip plants and the facilities around them are relentless about heat. That points straight to chillers, cooling equipment, pumps, heat exchangers, air handling, filtration, and compressors. Plenty of manufacturers outside semiconductors are also upgrading their plants for energy efficiency and better uptime. The same equipment that supports a high spec facility also helps a food plant, a chemical facility, a plastics shop, or a metal fabricator keep production stable and costs controlled. And yes, the metalworking and fabrication world is in the middle of this too. All that capacity requires structural steel, enclosures, skids, frames, ducting, guarding, and constant maintenance work. Lathes, brakes, saws, presses, and general shop equipment do not need to be part of a cleanroom to benefit from the wave of construction and industrial buildout. When capital spending targets facilities, the job shops and maintenance teams get busy.My expectation for 2026 is upbeat: not because every buyer will suddenly chase the latest trend, but because real world industrial investment is still moving forward. If you sell dependable machines that keep plants running, keep temperatures under control, and keep power stable, you are selling what the buildout requires. In a year where customers want certainty, availability, and proven performance, used equipment is positioned to win.
