A solenoid valve is an electromechanically operated valve. An electric coil (the solenoid) moves a plunger to open, close, or redirect the flow of air, water, oil, steam, gas, or refrigerant. Solenoid valves come in direct-acting and pilot-operated designs and in 2-way, 3-way, and 4-way configurations. They are used in factory automation, pneumatics and fluid power, HVAC and refrigeration, irrigation, oil and gas, food and beverage processing, and water treatment. They are also called electric valves, electrically actuated valves, or solenoid-operated valves; refrigeration techs often call them “liquid line solenoids,” and pneumatic versions are commonly called air valves or directional control valves.
