Roadheaders, also called boom type roadheaders, boom miners, partial face boring machines, tunnel headers, and mechanical excavators, are continuous cutting machines used to excavate rock, coal, and mixed ground without drilling and blasting. They are commonly used in underground mining, tunnel construction, subway and rail projects, hydroelectric tunnels, roadway development, and civil excavation work. Roadheaders use a rotating cutting head mounted on a boom to cut material from the face, while gathering arms and conveyors move the excavated material away from the work area.
