A coupling is a mechanism utilized to link the ends of two shafts together for the transmission of power. Its main objective is to unite two rotating machines while allowing for a certain amount of end movement or misalignment or both. A variable speed fluid coupling involves installing a variable speed drive between the motor and the load to allow the motor to accelerate without accelerating the load. The drive can be an eddy current clutch or a fluid clutch. This helps to control the rate of acceleration of the load and dissipate heat generated in the drive, which usually has better cooling than the motor.
